Our appetite for the classic music of former decades has never been greater, but at last, cresting today's wave of mere imitators, comes tomorrow's super band: The Blue Water Giants is awash with seasoned musos who bring fresh life to a world of original songs and records that – crucially – they themselves made their names performing.
Captained by Josh Phillips (organist from the legendary Procol Harum) and singer/pianist Sam Tanner, the all-British crew is anchored by Status Quo’s John ‘Rhino’ Edwards on bass, and driven by twin-prop guitarists Freddie Edwards (Rhino’s son) with the excellent Neil Taylor from Tears for Fears and Robbie Williams’s band. Drummer Craig Alexander completes a line-up which, in addition to instrumental virtuosity, harbours the vocal skills to suit any song, any occasion.
Wide-ranging careers collaborating with AOR luminaries – among them Jeff Beck, Big Country, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, The Faces, Mick Hucknall, The Pretenders, Mike Rutherford, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner and The Who – lend The Blue Water Giants absolute authority when it comes to delivering their choice repertoire live. The sleek power and elegance they command has made them the undisputed figureheads of a new movement ... Super-Yacht Rock.

Richard Osmon has talked about the disappearance of Bands in the music charts. In the first 5 years of the 1980's there was a band at No 1 for 146 of the 260 weeks. In the first half of this decade there have been only 3! And one of them was a lost Beatles track!
The point is, if this continues, there will be no bands to see for future generations .... because they stopped making them.
As I write, Oasis have announced they are back. Live music is the industry now. But when Oasis are gone....who will play for the kids? Will they even know how to play an instrument? Will it just be AI?
Josh Phillips is a musician. He can play a piano as easily as we can talk. He has played with everyone worth playing with. And me! He has put together a band of originals. The artists who made the great music of the past, who were there in the beginning, who know how it should be played. You will not have many more chances to hear and see real musicians do their thing with that knowledge and insight. So I'd check them out asap. And bring your kids! It might, just might, inspire them to pick up a guitar and play, to paraphrase The Who.
This band is special…..very special! In fact they are the personification of the old saying which goes ‘they don’t make ‘em like that anymore’…..and it’s true they don’t…..where else could you find a band of such talented musicians who over the years have played with so many of the royalty of rock n roll.
At the RNLI’s 200th anniversary ball a few weeks back these music legends rocked Yarmouth with several comments made that it was the best music Yarmouth had ever heard. This was not just an idle statement or flattery for the sake of it – it was a genuine feeling that the BWG were ‘simply the best’ – in fact they were the main reason for the Towers Party hosting a record 1,636 people a few weeks later at its annual event, compared with a normal number of some 1300. In short, they had come to see the Blue Water Giants headlining this annual charity event, which in turn meant that the amount of money raised on the night was a record £85,000.
Charity events are generally remembered for 2 simple things….1) did we have fun and 2) did we make lots of money for the charity. The answer to both of these points is a resounding yes and I am grateful to Josh and the rest of the Blue Water Giants for the contribution that they made to the success of the evening.
The night the RNLI rocked Yarmouth!!
Sat May 11th
What an incredible night that became...
On an unbelievable balmy evening in Yarmouth, the RNLI held their Gala Ball to celebrate 200 years since the RNLI was created as well as the Centenary of our Yarmouth station.
Hosted by Royal Solent Yacht Club, approaching one hundred and fifty guests arrived to enjoy an amazing evening of celebration which was enhanced by the fabulous band who entertained for the evening!
And what a fantastic fantastic Band... oh Wow,!!! ...generously sponsored by John Caulcutt, the legendary Blue Water Giants ..comprised of member of Procol Harum, Status Quo, Robbie Williams Band and Tears for Fears ... began to rock and and indeed they did !!!! and so did Yarmouth, as the sound could be heard all over town, lots of local revellers, having heard the band practice in the afternoon, were now amassing on the beach outside of the Club to listen to the evening performance as all tickets had sold out!
The guests by now had been joined by our RNLI lifeboat crew who also took to the dance floor until it was crammed with rockers young and old, displaying their finest dance moves ( some not have been exhibited for some while) in the Marquee ....
The Band could be heard all over Yarmouth and the beach along side the yacht club was now bursting with dancing locals .....
Then finally, when the Church clock struck midnight and within sight of the now floodlit Atlantic as a backdrop, the band played their finale song to much applause and requests for more ... guests found their launches and carriages to carry them home...
Indeed, a very special magical night to remember ...and many thanks to Josh and the legendary Blue Water Giants who made the evening such a great success .....and all for the RNLI.
A huge thank you to you and the band for a brilliant night. The feedback from the audience was beyond positive and they want you every Friday!
